Unlock the magic of Lith Printing!
Lith printing is a unique black and white darkroom printing technique which utilizes special developers and old expired Bromide based paper to create incredibly unique prints. Characteristics typically seen are very high contrast, gritty textures, dreamy highlights, and overall warm tones. No two prints are ever alike.
In this process paper is heavily overexposed and then developed in a highly diluted developer by inspection. Images appear very slowly but soon the dark areas of the image run away in what is called Infections Development. The print is then snatched out of the developer at the exact right moment.
What you will learn:
Lith chemistry basics
Lith paper choices
How key variables in the process effect the print such as: Exposure, developer dilution, temperature, and snatch point
How toning can affect your prints color
During the workshop we will make multiple prints from negatives of your choosing. Lith printing times are variable from 10-40+ minutes per print.
8×10 paper is included in the workshop price. For an additional charge 11×14 and 16×20 paper can be used. This paper we use in this workshop is rare and largely unobtainable today in these larger sizes.
What you will need:
Previously developed black and white 35mm film or medium format film.
Negatives should have good density for this process. Lith printing pairs well with infrared film, especially Kodak HIE. Expect very dreamy and ethereal prints when done with this film.
Previous basic knowledge of black and white darkroom printing.
Lith printing workshops are typically held on weekends and are 5-6 hours long due to the length of development time needed for each image. After payment, I will reach out via text message and email to coordinate and provide our exact address. $450 per person, max 1 person per session.
